Charnwood and surrounding area Reading about this day out will in no way capture the magic of what you will see and encounter, but here is a brief description of this delightful area
Bradgate Park, where we can walk, (if you wish) and explore this beautiful 750 year old hunting deer park, set in 840 acres, with its magnificent mix of heath, bracken, and grassy slopes, rocky outcrops, woodland, and deer herds. The ruins of this magnificent Tudor House, reminiscent of Hampton Court, remain, and the chapel still remains in its entirety today. Bradgate house was the birthplace and home of Lady Jane Grey, the nine day Queen of England, and it was after her execution the foresters of Bradgate, beheaded the great oak trees as a mark of respect, these oaks are still to be seen today. After a short walk to see the ancient oaks, we will be ready for coffee and a cake at the lovely little tea room situated in the park. Leaving the park, together we will explore this area known to some as ‘little alpine’, and you will discover just why that is, as we visit the local villages with their locally quarried granite built cottages, and their local slate or thatched roofs, that epitomize all that is beautiful, historic and interesting in this wonderful area. After refreshing yourself with a pre-lunch tipple at a very well known watering hole, where you really will enjoy both the atmosphere, the roaring log fire (weather applicable) and the warm welcome from the host, we shall head off to an award winning restaurant for lunch, where you will marvel at the quality of both food and service, and experience for yourself, just why this restaurant is on the Gourmet trail. After lunch, we will continue on to 802ft summit of the bronze age fort of Beacon Hill, famous for the views across the surrounding counties, and see Englands oldest volcanic rock structure, where in 1957 a young schoolboy found the worlds oldest plant fossil. Nearby, we drive past or pop in to see Beaumanor Hall, which played a key role during the war, as a covert signals unit, a significant, beautiful building which played host in the film Enigma, starring Kate Winslet. Nearby the famous Steam Railway station also featured in the film. See specialist page. Along the road to Quorn, which nestles alongside the River Soar, see the original home of the famous Quorn Hunt, and experience the wonderfully unique specialist shops, featuring local traditional art and crafts, deli/café interior design shop, and maybe buy a little something nice. I will show you many delightful and interesting sights on our day out, I have only scratched the surface of what to experience and expect.
